PreventionCare’s founder Dr. Adib is a cardiothoracic surgeon with a mission! He has operated on thousands of patients with ailing hearts, lungs and arteries. But at the same time, he has always held an exceptional passion in health preservation, wellness, vitality and stress management. Early in my professional life as a heart and lung surgeon, I became acutely aware of the roles that stress, lack of proper nutrition, smoking and inactivity play in patients’ illnesses. It became more and more obvious to me that it is unmanaged stress that often makes people smoke, eat poorly, become depressed or sedentary, gain weight and aquire many other serious maladies. While spending many hours with his patients discussing secondary prevention (preventive measures put in place after a disease entity is discovered) he has always been amazed and dismayed at scarcity of interest in primary prevention. Unfortunately, prevention has not been a healthcare priority. The scarcity of awareness and attention to preventive medicine both within and outside the medical community is absolutely mind boggling! A large percentage of heart surgery cases are urgent or emergent. That means patients need surgery shortly after their diagnostic procedures and at times, without even being able to go home in the interval. I was, and still am, being called upon to urgently intervene and save a patient’s life with surgery, only to find out that if someone had paid attention and provided preventive health care ten or twenty years back, the patient would not be going through this ordeal now. This is wrong! Many businesses are handsomely profiting from treating self-induced human illnesses but few are interested in keeping people healthy. Even worse, numerous others such as the food and tobacco industries make their profits by advertising and selling products that are damaging to our bodies and therefore contributing to development of many preventable illnesses and unnecessary deaths. "Healthcare" is today's most expensive misnomer. We are really not taking care of people's health. We wait until they get sick and then take care of their sickness. We need to change our $2.5 trillion "Sick care" industry into a true system of wellness. We need to preserve people's health. It is their most valuable treasure and when lost, it cannot be bought back at any price. With that ideal relentlessly in my mind, I founded PreventionCare to help people maintain their precious gift of health and to serve as a resource for organizations who truly want to help their employees achieve their best by preserving their state of wellness, their vitality and their satifaction with work and personal life. Dr. Adib is an active in cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon as well as being a certified Wellness and Stress Consultant (SWC) with full training at individual and corporate levels by The Canadian Institute of Stress. He has given numerous presentations, courses and workshops on stress, wellness and vitality topics. He and his wife Susan live in Madison, Wisconsin.
